How to format a write-protected USB flash drive or memory card
- Open start menu, in the search bar typeregedit and press Enter. This will open the registry editor.
- Navigate to the following path:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
- Note: If the registry keyStorageDevicePolicies does not exist, you will need to
create it manually.
Highlight Storage Device Policies, and then create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value named asWrite Protect. - Highlight Storage Device Policies, and then create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value named asWrite Protect.
- Double click the keyWriteProtect in the right window and set the value to 0 in theValue Data Boxand press OK button.
- Restart the computer and try formatting USB drive.
